STREET ART IN VALPARAISO, CHILE
Graffiti around every corner
Valparaiso has a harbour, palm trees, many hills, numerous little alleys and it’s full of incredible street art!
On the popular hills Cerro Concepcion and Cerro Allegre you are surrounded by graffiti everywhere. You feel like being in a giant art gallery and for graffiti sprayers Valparaiso is heaven. It all started in the 1970ies during the oppressive regime of Augusto Pinochet. People expressed their thoughts and protests in their graffiti. After the political change to democracy street art in Valparaiso thrived. But not only political reasons, also the fact that Valparaiso’s houses are built out of traditional vulnerable mortar and have to be covered by unattractive metal plates, made street art indispensable. Nowadays it is hard to find facades that don’t tell a story.
Go on a journey with us and explore Valparaiso’s colorful neighborhood…
Do you like Street Art?
To be honest, we have never been really big fans of grafitti and street art. When we passed one we thought “oh, it’s nice” but never really thought about the story it tells or how much effort the sprayer put in it. Valparaiso impressed us and opened our eyes.
